Our Story & Legacy
Sekolah Ugama Radin Mas (SURM) was established in the early 1950s as a religious class designed for parents and teenagers.

Sekolah Ugama Radin Mas (SURM) was established in the early 1950s as a religious class designed for parents and teenagers. The classes were led by a renowned teacher; Kiyai Zuhri Mutammim (1905-1985) at his mother-in-law’s place at 47 Radin Mas. Quran recitation and fardhu ain classes that were specially catered for children were held at the Radin Mas Surau situated in front of Kiyai Zuhri’s in-laws house. The surau is built upon a plot of land which was donated by his father-in-law Haji Abdul Halim Bin Karto. As the number of students at the surau increased, Haji Sujai Bin Haji Mansur realized the need to build a school to conduct the religious classes. He suggested that idea to the leaders of Radin Mas Kampung, namely, Haji Abu Bakar Haji Abdul Halim, Ahmad Jabri (an UMNO figure at that time), Said bin Ali and Mohd Salleh Kechut. Upon Kiyai Zuhri’s agreement, SURM was built under the leadership of Haji Sujai and the other leaders. Hence in 1956, Sekolah Ugama Radin Mas was established and registered under the Ministry of Education (MOE) with license number 118. In 1968, Radin Mas surau was proposed to become a mosque. With the larger space, more students were able to attend the classes in SURM. However, in the year 2001, the land Radin Mas mosque was on was given way to the developments of the country, resulting in SURM being shifted to Al-Amin mosque, situated only 2 km away from the old Radin Mas mosque. In 2009, SURM initiated the first full-time Tahfiz Madrasah in Singapore. Located in Darul Aman mosque, the Madrasah provided a full Tahfiz curriculum at Secondary Level. It also offered Islamic studies, Arabic studies and Academic studies. The curriculum enabled students to sit for the O-level national examinations, and to further their studies at Pre-University or Diploma (Islamic Studies) levels, both within Singapore and abroad. Later on, SURM expanded further by running a part-time weekend madrasah in 2011 located at Joo Chiat Terrace. It provided basic Islamic studies to primary school students. After more than a decade of operating at Darul Aman mosque, SURM was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, the Madrasah was moved to Kembangan Court and is operating there till now. It is estimated that about 10,000 students have participated in religious classes in SURM since it was first established.

It is estimated that about 10,000 students have participated and benefitted in the religious classes by SURM since its establishment to date.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته حَامِدًا وَمُصَلِّيًا وَمُسَلِّمًا على سيدنا محمد وآله الكرام ، وبعد ؛ To all educators, seekers of knowledge, and beloved students, مرحبًا مرحبًا بوصية رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "Welcome, O bearers of the Prophet’s ﷺ legacy!" Such were the words of the Prophet ﷺ to his companions in welcoming those who came to seek knowledge. He advised: "Give your utmost attention to your teaching." Imam al-Zarnuji once stated that a perfect student is formed through the presence of three key parties: 1. A dedicated teacher who guides, 2. A committed student who strives, and 3. A supportive family that upholds the educational journey. As a well-known proverb goes: "It takes a village to raise a child." At Madrasah Tahfiz Sekolah Ugama Radin Mas (SURM), we strive earnestly to not only provide a structured learning system, a nurturing environment, and effective pedagogical approaches, but also to uphold the principles and conditions of ’ilm inherited from our scholars of the past. Yet, above all these, we place the greatest emphasis on adab and akhlaq. Indeed, with proper adab, we firmly believe that Allah ﷻ will open the doors of understanding, bestow blessings, and grant insight (futuh) and intellectual clarity to our students. Therefore, with humility, we call upon all levels of society to join us in carrying this noble trust and continuing the legacy of the Qur’an and the Islamic scholarly tradition, in order to nurture a generation of excellence: · Students who diligently seek knowledge of the Qur’an and Shariah, · Families who support and cultivate an Islamic atmosphere at home, · Contributors across Singapore who extend their support and donations. Let us always remember that in order to succeed in this world, one must be equipped with knowledge. Likewise, success in the Hereafter is also rooted in knowledge. Therefore, if we aspire to succeed in both this life and the next, there is no path more certain, more noble, and more essential that the pursuit of knowledge. It is no surprise, then, that every SURM badge established by our forebearers, is inscribed with profound meaning: “Knowledge is the Torch of Progress” Reflect upon this, realise to its truth, and strive with sincerity to become a light for the ummah. السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ حَامِدًا وَمُصَلِّيًا وَمُسَلِّمًا عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ الْكِرَامِ ، وَبَعْدُ ؛ Wahai para pendidik, penuntut ilmu, serta para murid yang dikasihi, مَرْحَبًا مَرْحَبًا بِوَصِيَّةِ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ "Selamat datang, wahai pemegang wasiat Rasulullah ﷺ !" Demikianlah sabda Baginda Nabi ﷺ kepada para sahabat dalam menyambut kedatangan mereka yang menuntut ilmu. Baginda berpesan: "Berilah perhatian yang sungguh terhadap pengajaranmu." Imam al-Zarnuji pernah menyatakan bahawa terbentuknya seorang pelajar yang sempurna dengan kehadiran tiga golongan utama: 1. Guru yang berdedikasi dalam membimbing, 2. Pelajar yang bersungguh-sungguh, dan 3. Keluarga yang mendokong usaha pendidikan. Seperti mana pepatah yang masyhur menyebut: "Sekampung diperlukan untuk membina seorang insan." Di Madrasah Tahfiz Sekolah Ugama Radin Mas (SURM), kami berusaha sedaya upaya bukan sahaja menyediakan sistem pembelajaran yang tersusun, suasana yang mendidik, serta pendekatan pedagogi yang berkesan, bahkan kami menekankan rukun dan syarat ilmu yang diwarisi daripada para ulama silam. Namun, yang lebih utama daripada semua itu ialah adab dan akhlak. Sesungguhnya, dengan adab, kami yakin Allah ﷻ akan membuka pintu kefahaman, mencurahkan keberkatan, serta mengurniakan futuh dan kecerdikan kepada para pelajar. Maka dengan penuh rendah hati, kami menyeru kepada seluruh lapisan masyarakat agar bersama-sama memikul amanah ini dan meneruskan legasi Al-Quran serta warisan ilmu syariat demi melahirkan generasi yang cemerlang; · Para pelajar yang tekun menuntut ilmu Al-Quran dan ilmu Syariat, · Para waris yang menyokong dan membina suasana Islami di dalam rumah, · Para penyumbang dari segenap masyarakat Singapura yang terus memberi sokongan dan sumbangan. Ketahuilah bahawa untuk berjaya di dunia, perlu kepada ilmu. Untuk berjaya di akhirat, juga perlu kepada ilmu. Maka untuk berjaya di kedua-duanya, tiada jalan lain melainkan dengan ilmu. Tidak hairanlah bahawa pada setiap lencana SURM yang diasaskan oleh para leluhur kami, terukir dengan penuh makna: “Pengetahuan Suluh Kemajuan” Maka renungilah, sedarilah, dan berusahalah dengan bersungguh-sungguh untuk menjadi cahaya kepada umat.
