LIFE AFTER SURM

Updated: Oct 9

by Sofiatul Marwiyyah (Graduant of 2014)

I was often asked by my friends in Darul Quran (Malaysia), how I revise or memorise the Quran for more than 5 pages in a day? I often replied to them that I was actually practising whatever I have learnt when I was in SURM and they doubted that. They could not believe that I was from a tahfiz school in Singapore that do not require staying in a hostel. I often told them it was not easy as there were many distractions after school. However, I always believed that to be good in memorisation, especially in revision of memorised verses, one has to start with small steps and be consistent in it. This is our adab towards Al-Quran.

At one point, I was at a lost for words to explain to them about my experiences. It was then that I realised how big an impact SURM had on me and my attitude towards memorising the Quran. When I left my dear school, I left with a heavy heart but an open mind. As I embarked on a journey to re-memorise the Quran, I remembered Ustaz Amir mentioning that adab (etiquette) is the key. Adab only materialises as actions when a person practises it. It is never told that adab exists in intelligent students only; it can be seen in anyone whom Allah has made it easy for him.

Adab towards the Quran has to be present for those who wish to memorise it and gain knowledge from it. Adab plays such a major role in memorising the Quran and during classes because with unpredictable schedules students often place the Quran aside.

Apart from that, punctuality is also part of adab. In fact, it is an amanah. I observe that most teachers are disturbed by latecomers. Thus, being late for Quran classes is lack of adab towards Al-Quran and also towards the teachers.

All in all, at this point, there are more to learn ahead of me and what I have learnt before guides me towards understanding the walks of life as I tread its path.

I try my best to put my trust in Allah. I believe that there is always a blessing in everything that Allah has allowed me to experience – SURM and now, Darul Quran Malaysia. He knows best.

My teachers and lecturers have not only imparted knowledge but also taught me the valuable adab of one who has the Quran in the heart. Adab brings blessings and increase from Allah. On a final note, I also learn to be grateful and never ask for more.
